Day of Photonics is an annual event that promotes “photonics” towards the general public. Companies, research organizations, and organizations involved in photonics will reach out to their communities to raise awareness about what is photonics and why it is important, and promote the role of their organization in the photonics ecosystem and value chain. At the occasion of the anniversary, activities are organized over numerous countries and encompass all kinds of demonstrations on the impact of photonics on our day-to-day life.

Why the 21 October? On 21 October 1983 the General Conference of Weights And Measures adopted the value of 299,792.458 km/s for the speed of light.

Photonics includes all technologies that use light, create light or modify light.

Photonics technologies include: LED lighting, Photovoltaic solar energy, Photonics Integrated Circuits, Optical components, Lasers, Sensors, Imaging, Displays, Projectors, Optic fiber, and other photonic related technologies which find applications in health, security, agriculture, food, communication, transportation, …

Photonics is one of Key Enabling Technologies that will be the main driving force behind the development of future goods and services. Photonics is technology that will ultimately have the same impact on society as the electronics industry.

Photonics technologies are amazing, fascinating, and you find them everywhere: in communication, entertainment, medical, manufacturing, automotive, energy, lighting, agriculture, photovoltaic, security, art, … Whether you are looking for a new career, a student that needs to make a choice for your studies, if you are a financial investor or a politician that influences policies, think PHOTONICS!
